Scratch or Python: Which Should My Child Learn First?

Pollen Education · Updated

For most children under 10, start with Scratch. For older children and teenagers, Python is usually the better first choice. Both teach the same core ideas; the difference is how much typing and reading each one asks of the child.

Scratch: coding with blocks

Scratch is a free visual language made for children. Commands are coloured blocks that snap together, so there are no spelling mistakes or missing brackets. Children quickly make animations, stories and games and share them.

  • Best for: ages 6 to 10, or older beginners who want a gentle start.
  • Teaches: sequences, loops, conditions, events and variables.
  • Limits: projects stay inside Scratch, and it is not used for professional software.

Python: a real programming language

Python is one of the most widely used languages in the world, in areas from websites to data science and AI. Its simple, readable style makes it a popular first typed language.

  • Best for: ages 10 and up, or younger children who have already done Scratch.
  • Teaches: the same ideas as Scratch, plus typing exact code, reading error messages and working with data.
  • Limits: early projects look plainer than Scratch, so a good teacher keeps them fun.

When to move from Scratch to Python

  • Your child builds Scratch projects without much help.
  • They ask how 'real' apps or games are made.
  • They type comfortably and are not put off by small mistakes.
  • They are around 9 to 11 years old, though some are ready earlier.

How Pollen Education decides

We look at what your child already knows, not only their age. In the free demo class the teacher sees how your child thinks and recommends the right starting point: our Scratch Programming course for grades 1 to 5, or our Coding course for grades 1 to 10, which teaches Python and, depending on the child's ability and interests, other languages such as C++.

Questions parents ask

Is Scratch real coding?

Yes. Scratch uses the same logic as any programming language: sequences, loops, conditions and variables. It just uses blocks instead of typed text.

Can my child skip Scratch and start with Python?

Yes, if they are around 10 or older and read and type comfortably. Younger children usually enjoy Python more after some Scratch first.

How long does it take to learn Python basics?

With two or three classes a week, many children are writing small programs on their own within a few months. It depends on the child's age and practice.
