What Is the Right Age for Kids to Start Coding?
Most children can start coding at around 6 or 7, once they can read simple words and follow a few steps in order. What matters more than age is starting with the right tool: block-based coding for younger children, and typed languages like Python once they are comfortable with the ideas.
Ages 6 to 8: coding with blocks
At this age children learn best by making things they can see. Block-based tools like Scratch let them snap commands together to move a character, play a sound or build a simple game, without worrying about spelling or punctuation.
They are already learning real programming ideas: putting steps in order, repeating actions with loops, and making choices with if-then blocks.
Ages 9 to 12: bigger projects, first typed code
Children in this range can plan a project, fix their own mistakes and stay with a problem for longer. Many move from Scratch to Python, where they type real code, often by rebuilding something they already made in blocks.
This is also a good age to connect coding with other interests, such as games, robots or websites.
Ages 13 and up: real-world languages and tools
Teenagers can learn the same languages professionals use, including Python, JavaScript and web development with HTML, CSS and React. Projects become more ambitious: apps, websites, data projects and simple AI tools.
It is never too late to begin. A 14-year-old starting from zero usually moves quickly through the basics.
Signs your child is ready
- They can read short instructions on their own.
- They enjoy puzzles, building toys or figuring out how things work.
- They want to make their own games or animations, not only play them.
- They can focus on one activity for 20 to 30 minutes.
Start from what your child knows, not only their age
Two children of the same age can be at very different points. At Pollen Education, children are placed in a module by what they already know, so a beginner is not rushed and a quick learner is not held back. Every class is live and 1:1 with a teacher.

Questions parents ask
Can a 5-year-old learn coding?
Some 5-year-olds enjoy simple coding games and screen-free activities, but most children get more out of structured coding classes from about 6 or 7, when they can read short instructions.
Should my child start with Scratch or Python?
Children under about 10 usually do best starting with Scratch. Older children and teenagers can often start with Python directly, especially with a teacher guiding them.
How many coding classes a week are enough?
Two to three short classes a week works well for most children: often enough to remember what they learned, without becoming a chore.
